Schau!
  • Kind Shop window installation
  • Client Britzpetermann
  • Our Part Idea & realization

Since our formation we try to realize a passion project at the year end. Last year we developed the visual cover for the musician Karlo Jurina This year Schau! is born. A series of interactive shop window installations.

Keep your eyes open for the next editions.

All Eyes On You

The series is starting with “All Eyes On You”, a bunch of different sized eyes who follow the passers-by. Simple concept, but the effect was immense. The passers-by loved it especially the kids react with the installation without any inhibitions.

Realization

We used a high quality projector and semi-matt foil from the hardware store to project the eyes to the window. They are rendered by a WebGL frontend using a shader sphere effect. The detection is performed by OpenFrameworks and the Kinect.
An Arduino controlled servo motor, pushing a button on the projector remote, is turning the installation on at 4pm and off at 11pm.

Just Wave

In this episode three-dimensional stripes stand up when people walk by and piano sounds are played according to the peoples position and speed.

Realization

Basically we used the same hardware setup, but we added amplifier and outdoor speakers to be able to play sounds.

The sounds are played by midi nodes which are send through a nodejs socket-bridge to Apples GarageBand.

The projection planes where cut from plexiglas and semi-matt foil was glued to it.

More Than Words

Animated by the 90ties-male-adolescence-dream Samantha Fox, the passers-by can change the words of a random sentence by “touching” the window. Also color and font are changing randomly. The visual outcome is supported by a machine voice generated by apples speech, speaking or singing the originated sentence with randomly selected voices.
A button called “Mr. Zufall” builds sentences by fortune.

Realization

We used the same hardware which we used by the episodes before. The frames are standard picture frames covered with semi-matt foil.

Seat IAA Kinect Game Projectdetails

Client

The Agency Vorwärts GmbH from cologne asked us to do the complete development, including graphic design, development and installation.

Realization

Our setup of choice was a MacMini with a KINECT sensor attached and a 37” Display.

We used processing to program a server that gathers the kinect data, calculates relevant depth information via openCV framework and sends the calculated data via socket connection to a flash application which did the visualization.

We love

Playing with Kinect Sensor.
Having fun testing over and over again, always breaking the record.
Working with Vorwärts was a pleasure very straight briefings, lots of freedom in design and development for us and very nice contacts.

AKEMI wins Mozilla Labs Demoparty Our experiment AKEMI has won the Mozilla Labs Demoparty competition and is presented at the Alternative Party 2011 in Helsinki.

We are very happy visiting Helsinki and the Party, having a great time in this wonderful city and meeting the the artists and geeks of the demo scene.

Big thanks go out to the community, judges and to Mozilla labs for supporting our beloved media in a none commercial but more artistic background.

AKEMI VISIT THE EXPERIMENT
In a nutshell, most things turned out well in this environment. We could implement the visual and technical design as we wanted and reached our goal in time. From our perspective, haXe & WebGL is a very good alternative to other interactive web technologies. However, the lag of an authoring tool like Flash IDE changes a lot of the workflow. On the other hand coding haXe is really just like coding in Java or AS3 and FDT workes well as a haXe IDE.

Many thanks to the interactive community (haXe, WebGL, JS, Flash) - it is always so easy to dig into new stuff :)

Karlo Jurina "Selbstgespräche" Projectdetails

Idea

Assuming that that soliloquies are notional reflections and that this form of personal conflicts always initiate, change and readjust something, the idea arose of an agile structure which is subject to new impulses and permanent changing and never is the same structure than before.
Thus, a music player occured which plays music simultaneously, visualizes and create the face of the album.

Realization

Basis is a constant grid consisting of 190 coincidental symbols. Length and amount of lines are the result of the length of song names and amount of songs. The music itself modifies the grid. This impulse changes size, position and symbols itselves whereby new structures and pictures occure. Every moment is unique.
The music can be controled by the horizontal lines. The name of the song gets visuable at a hover above. A plectrum marks the current song. The functions of the player are conscious rudimentally to offer less diversion as possible.
A technical challenge was to get one or more clear impulse to which the symbols could react. Unfortunately we only could get bad results with the obvious selection of song spectrums. It is also not possible to let symbols responsive of several different signs like bass and melodies.
Thats why we decided to play single layers by hand which not just distributes a handmade touch to the digital character of interpretation but also a precise possibility to control visualization.
As control input we used the iPad as the multitouch surface allowed very intuitively flowing movements. We developed our first iOS App PhädPäd to control the visualization.
The final layers to this project were played by Karlo Jurina itself, so he could decide on his own how his songs are supposed to appear visually. We filmed a video A look behind that shows the process of recording the different guitar layers with the ipad.

We love

Altogether it was a very nice project with good music in permanent rotation and greasy iPads and iPhones. We’d like to do it again!

Sneak on our current project for the musician Karlo Jurina At the moment we are creating a digital album cover for the cologne musician Karlo Jurina and his new album “Selbstgespräche”. We are building a flash website which is all in one an albumcover, a sound visualisation and a musicplayer. Currently we are working on the final touch but here is a short sneak.

We developed our first iPad App PhädPäd to control the sound visualisation on the website and as an add on we filmed together with cameraman Dominik Thomas the whole process to explain what is happening behind the scenes.

The video “A look behind” and more detailed information soooooon.
